The Walking Football League, headed by former England captain David Platt , has launched a new initiative in East Lancashire.

Walking Football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the UK for older people, with more than 70 per cent of players playing more than twice per week and 85 per cent of them wanting more competitive football.

The Walking Football League will provide regular matches for the players and teams, in a competitive but fun environment.

The leagues will kick off in the second week of September at venues in Manchester, Darwen, Nantwich and Chester.

League entry is open to all existing teams, new teams of like-minded individuals and businesses looking to foster good working relationships.

David Platt, former England captain and head of the Walking Football League, said: “Having played football for a living I understand the mindset of players wanting regular, competitive matches that stimulate and motivate them.

"I have been enthused by conversations I have had with existing walking footballers who have a passion for the sport, it continues to give them so many variable benefits.

"I do not play football anymore due to an injury developed because of my career, but plan to participate in walking football because the rules protect my joint instability.”

Last year, two local company directors represented England in a Walking Football World Tournament held at St George’s Park.

David Cafferty scored the winning penalty in the inaugural World Nations Cup final on Saturday, August 26, for England's over-50s team.

David and Barry Gavahan own D.E.S Group in Capricorn Way, Blackburn, a facilities management company recognised for quality and innovation.
