New Burnley signing Andreas Hountondji is excited by the club’s “ambition” as he prepares for life at Turf Moor.
The 22-year-old has put pen to paper over a four-year deal with the Clarets and becomes the third new addition of the summer after Shurandy Sambo and Lucas Pires.
“I spoke with (Scott Parker). It was a good discussion, he spoke to me about his values, principles and the way he sees football. It was perfect for me,” Hountondji told the official club channels.
“The facilities here are incredible, there is everything a footballer needs and wants. I am excited to train every day and work hard to get better and better.”
He added: “It is a club that gives chances to young players to help them get better and better. I love English football with a lot of transitions, intensity and space.”
The forward joined Caen as a youngster and signed his first professional deal in 2019, making his senior debut two years later.
He had loan spells with Quevilly-Rouen and Orleans during the 2022/23 campaign and has won six caps for Benin on the international stage.
Hountondji arrives at Turf Moor on the back of a prolific loan spell at Rodez, scoring 16 goals for the Ligue 2 outfit.
“Being a young footballer is difficult at times because you have to make the right decisions,” he continued.
“For me, playing is the most important thing - that is how you learn. I think I have made a good choice and I am happy.
“My best quality is that I know I’m not perfect. I am not scared of making mistakes, I will take risks.
“I am a striker, I try to make danger but I know that mistakes are part of the game. If I fail, I will keep trying but when I succeed, I am dangerous.
“You need to like pressure because in football, if you want to be at the top, there is always pressure.”
While Hountondji speaks excellent English, the other French-speaking members of the Burnley squad – Maxime Esteve, Wilson Odobert and Han-Noah Massengo – have helped him immediately feel at home in East Lancashire.
“Of course, it is easier to speak to the French players but everybody here is accessible,” he smiled.
“It is like a little family here, we all speak to each other and it feels good to be here. I am ambitious and if I wasn’t ambitious, I would not be here.
“Burnley is an ambitious club so we want to reach the top, win games and maybe even win trophies!
“It is a new season and a new objective. We need the fans and without them, we could not be here.”
