Burnley youngster Michael Mellon has joined League One side Stockport County on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old forward spent the first half of last season at Morecambe, scoring 15 goals in 27 appearances. He then headed to Dundee to continue his development in the Scottish Premiership.

Mellon, the son of ex-Burnley Man Micky, has also earned call-ups for Scotland’s Under-17 and Under-21 sides.

He will now link up with the Stockport squad, who are currently on a training camp in Spain as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.

Manager Dave Challinor told the club website: “Michael had a fantastic 23/24 season in terms of his goal return and has naturally attracted plenty of interest from clubs this summer. For him to choose us as his destination for the coming season is a great coup for us.

“He’s a finisher and scorer of all types of goals, and given the service, we think he’ll have a big impact on League One this season.

“It’s great that he’s over here in Spain with us to allow him to integrate with the group and allow us to assess where he’s at physically, but also hopefully all of our travelling supporters will be rewarded by seeing him in a County shirt for the first time.

“We are all really looking forward to working with Michael and think he’ll be a real favourite with the fans.”

The Hatters are aiming to build on a successful season, which saw them clinch the League Two title ahead of Wrexham.

Director of football Simon Wilson added: “After his impact at Morecambe last season, Michael was an in-demand player for many clubs this summer.

“We are delighted to be able to secure him and integrate straight away into our pre-season camp.

“Often with loans, it can be harder to get them up to speed as they are done later in the window, or in January, and this gives us all the advantage of a good block of work together before the season begins.

“His record shows what he is – a goalscorer. His finishing ability is of the top level and we hope to benefit from that while continuing to work with him on his all-round game.”
