John Ruddy has completed a surprise move to Newcastle United following his Birmingham City exit.

The 37-year-old goalkeeper has put pen to paper over a 12-month contract at St James’ Park ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.

“This is a massive club and it's a massive opportunity, so I'm really excited to get started,” he told the club website.

"It was an opportunity I couldn't turn down. It's a huge, huge club which is only going one way and to be a part of that, however big or small, is going to be very pleasing and very exciting.”

The Magpies are aiming to build on their seventh-place finish in the top flight and head coach Eddie Howe is confident Ruddy’s experience will benefit the squad.

"I'm pleased to welcome John to Newcastle United,” he added. “He has a huge amount of experience and adds a level of support and competition that we need.

"As well as his abilities on the pitch, he has a strong mentality and he is a leader, which will only benefit the group. I'm looking forward to him joining us as we prepare for the season ahead."

Ruddy had been linked with a move to Rovers to reunite with John Eustace as the boss prepares for his first full season at Ewood Park.

The Lancashire Telegraph reported in April that the goalkeeper was not on the club’s radar but there has since been interest in Leo Wahlstedt from Scandinavia.

Ruddy made 46 appearances for Birmingham in all competitions last season, keeping 10 clean sheets.

He was initially offered fresh terms to remain at St Andrew’s despite relegation from the Championship.

The Blues have since added Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Ryan Allsop to their goalkeeping ranks from Burnley and Hull City respectively.
