Callum Brittain was almost ever-present for Rovers in the Championship last season – and hopes he can continue to play a big part at Ewood Park.

Only Sam Szmodics spent longer on the pitch in the league than Brittain, whose versatility proved to be a useful asset.

The 26-year-old took pride in being dependable last term, although he admits the hectic schedule took its toll at times.

“I always knew I could play (lots of) games, I have done my whole career,” he told RoversTV. “It wasn’t a surprise to do that, but mentally it was tough.

“We played well in games and didn’t get what we deserved. Then we had games where we made mistakes and that was hard to deal with as well.

“There were some lonely nights but I think you get more resilient through that. Coming out the other side like we did, it was a good reward for us.

“I have loved my two years here so far. I love the area, the boys here, the staff – everyone is so kind. I am really enjoying my time here and to play that many games is a privilege.”

The summer break came at a welcome time for Brittain after such a busy season, and it was a memorable one as he tied the knot with his partner.

Now, the full-back is ready for the hard work to start again as John Eustace leads his first pre-season with the squad.

“I am refreshed, the summer was amazing,” he beamed. “It was quite eventful, I got married.

“It was probably the best summer I have ever had, a nice break after a tough season. It was the best day me and my wife could have asked for, it was unbelievable.

“Grinding out game after game, it was a tough situation physically and mentally. It was nice to let loose after the season and have my stag do, then my wedding. It was lovely but it goes way too quickly!”

Time on the training pitch was a luxury during the second half of last season as the fixtures came thick and fast, and Brittain is now eager to make the most of pre-season with the head coach.

“It was carnage! That whole period, we didn’t know what was happening with the last gaffer. Then the gaffer came in quickly and it was just about trying to grind out results,” he recalled.

“We have got a fresh start now. Everyone looks good and it is about working hard now and getting to know the patterns of play.

“Everyone knows how hard the Championship is so you have to get your body right. It is nice to work hard without the games – coming into training, doing the running and the patterns of play.

“We have our trip to Austria which will be nice, it is bonding time as well. We have got a few new lads in and a lot of young boys, everyone needs to step up and we will work hard together to gel as a team.”
