Rovers have been drawn away to League One side Stockport County in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
John Eustace's side were ball number four in the northern draw, with ties to be played the week commencing August 12 - the first midweek after the season opener.
Rovers reached the fourth round of the competition last year, losing 2-0 to Chelsea in November. Jon Dahl Tomasson's side beat Walsall, Harrogate Town and Cardiff City before heading to Stamford Bridge.
Stockport are preparing for life in the third tier after clinching the League Two title under Dave Challinor. The sides haven't met in a competitive fixture since 2001.
Most Championship sides enter the competition in the first round apart from Burnley and Luton, who were both relegated from the Premier League last term.
Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea are the only sides who enter the competition in the third round due to competing in Europe.
