Harry Leonard is relishing the opportunity to get back into full training after an awkward back injury.

The young striker fractured his back in February, pulling up in training, and ended up sitting out the remainder of the season.

The 20-year-old had enjoyed a breakthrough campaign under Jon Dahl Tomasson, scoring his first senior goals and playing an important role in the first half of the season.

Leonard hasn't played since John Eustace came into the club and after four months on the sidelines, he is eagerly itching to be involved again.

After sticking to the rule book, Leonard is out on the grass again and has been doing extra work with the coaches at the Senior Training Centre. He was filmed with Lewis Travis, John Buckley and Zak Gilsenan last week to get himself sharp for pre-season.

Rovers need more goals in the team and Leonard is hoping that he can hit the ground running in the new campaign.

"It's coming along nicely, the first stages of my rehabilitation I've been in the gym but not able to do that much," Leonard told RoversTV..

"I'm at the stage now where I am getting my fitness back up, looking at the first week of pre-season to be back in training.

"I feel good. It feels like there is light at the end of the tunnel, it's been nearly four months now. At times, it went really slow but I'm at the stage where I feel like myself again now.

"I feel like I can trust myself and my body on the pitch again. I can do what I'm used to again.

"It's the kind of injury where you don't want to break down as it can set you back weeks, months. I've had to take my time but as I'm young, there was no point in rushing.

"Where we were at the season, near the end, I just had to take my time and get myself back to 100 per cent fitness.

"If I'd rushed this injury, it could've set me back months. I'm glad it happened towards the end of the season, I've been in, doing rehab and getting out on the grass.

"I've been playing catch up, I have missed a lot of football at the end of the season. I need to put myself in the good stead for the start of pre-season and then the new campaign."

Rovers would've benefitted from Leonard from the bench in the closing stages of the season. Instead, he had to watch from the sidelines.

The young forward even tried his hand at co-commentary, joining RoversTV in the press box for the end-of-season games. That didn't make the anguish of watching the team suffer any easier.

"It's really tough, I'm a footballer and I don't want to be sat on the sidelines," he added.

"To do so when the team is struggling and you feel like you can help but you're out. You have to try and stay positive but I'll make sure I'm 100 per cent at it for next season."
