Adam Wharton has been named in England's squad for the European Championships this summer.

The Blackburn Rovers Academy graduate made his debut as a substitute in Monday night's 3-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina after receiving his first call-up.

Wharton impressed in his 30-minute cameo, completing all 36 of his passes and catching the eye. That did his chances of avoiding the seven-player list that had to be cut from the initial 33-man squad no harm.

Gareth Southgate was expected to name his final England squad on Saturday morning, after England's final warm-up friendly against Iceland. Squads have to be submitted to UEFA by 11pm on Friday night.

SUMMER SCOUTING: LEWIS TRAVIS AND ROVERS' TRANSFER DOMINOES

However, England confirmed that James Maddison and Curtis Jones had left the training camp on Thursday morning, leaving five players left to go.

It has since emerged that Harry Maguire will not be fit for the tournament and therefore won't travel. James Trafford is the goalkeeper who has missed out, with Dean Henderson getting the nod as third-choice.

Jack Grealish has also been axed despite performing well against Bosnia, with Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite the last man to miss out.

Southgate formally confirmed the England squad in his pre-match press conference, scheduled for 6pm on Thursday.

The England boss praised Wharton's vision and ability to pass forward after completing all of his 36 passes on Monday night.

"Adam Wharton showed what he has been doing at the end of the season and in training," Southgate said.

"I like what he's done with us in the first few days. He sees pictures early and can play forward. It is very early for him but lovely that he looked as comfortable as he did.

"It’s a big step up from where he was at the beginning of the season but I like the fact he sees pictures early, he plays forward.

“Obviously he’s got quality on the ball but it’s the ability to receive and play the ball forward that’s really caught our eye.”
