Blackburn Rovers will be due a 'significant' payment from Crystal Palace when Adam Wharton makes his first competitive England start, The Lancashire Telegraph can reveal.
The 20-year-old has been named in The Three Lions' squad for this summer's European Championships after excelling in the Premier League.
Wharton only left Ewood Park for South London in January but his performances have been impossible to ignore. The Academy graduate impressed in his 30-minute cameo on Monday night against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
That forced Gareth Southgate's hand and he will now jet off to Germany with England, just six months after playing in the Championship with Rovers.
SUMMER SCOUTING: DOLAN'S FUTURE AND SOLVING ROVERS' TWO-YEAR PROBLEN
As previously reported, players must make a competitive appearance for their country to trigger any transfer add-ons. Wharton's debut cap was in a friendly match and so Rovers are not eligible for any international bonuses from Palace.
However, they will receive what has been described to The Lancashire Telegraph as a 'significant' payment when/if Wharton makes his first competitive start for The Three Lions.
Wharton's inclusion in the squad therefore opens the possibility of a windfall this summer, if he can force his way into Southgate's starting team at the Euros.
It's also understood that Rovers have a sell-on fee in the Wharton deal at a similar level to the one negotiated for David Raya, following his move to Brentford in 2019.
Former Director of Football Gregg Broughton revealed last year that the Spaniard's impending move to Arsenal would net Rovers around £5million.
Raya was sold for a fee in the region of £3million to the Bees and is set to make a permanent move to the Gunners for around £27million. A rough maths calculation would therefore suggest Rovers' clause is 20% of any profit, though that is unconfirmed.
It's understood that a similar, though not necessarily identical, figure was agreed with Crystal Palace when Wharton moved in January. The 20-year-old has already been linked with moves away from Selhurst Park after his eye-catching displays.
Bayern Munich have been most notably touted as admirers of Wharton, whilst Manchester City have also been credited with an interest but are unlikely to act in this upcoming window.
