Arnor Sigurdsson could make his return from injury this week as Blackburn Rovers' international call-ups prepare for action.

Sigurdsson has been out since the March break after picking up ankle ligament damage in his last appearance with Iceland. He missed the run-in for Rovers but was named in their 25-man squad for their upcoming friendlies.

Iceland will face England at Wembley on Friday, June 7 before hosting the Netherlands next Monday, June 11. That will give Sigurdsson an opportunity to get some valuable game time before pre-season.

The 24-year-old missed the off-season last term after picking up a groin injury on international duty, which was then aggravated on his return. John Eustace will be hoping he comes through these matches unscathed before players report for pre-season on June 24.

SUMMER SCOUTING: Rovers' goalkeeper dilemma and potential targets

Sam Szmodics could also be in action this week, with Ireland hosting Hungary on Tuesday night, June 4. The Republic of Ireland forward has been away on holiday since the season ended but reported for the summer camp last week.

Szmodics is yet to score in the green of Ireland but made his debut during the last break, scoring both goals. John O'Shea remains in temporary charge and they play Portugal on the 11th too, next Tuesday.

"It'll be a very tough game, they have obviously qualified for the Euros," O'Shea said on facing Hungary.

"They have a mixture in their squad with younger, talented players and some from the Premier League that we know about.

"They've got great players, they're well organised. They have good attacking threats and they can defend but also have the freedom to play. They have a desire to work very hard as a team and a unit.

"We want to continue the hard work we showed from the last camp but also add goals. We know we need to be more of a threat to the opposition.

"The run of form they're on, who they have faced, we know it's a test for us which the players and staff are looking forward to."

Connor O'Riordan has been called up for Ireland's Under-21s. They face Croatia (U21s) and England (U20s) over the next ten days. Former loanee Andrew Moran is training with the senior squad but will play with O'Riordan in these upcoming matches.

Adam Wharton is facing a decisive week on the international front too, with England playing their final warm-up games before the European Championships.

Gareth Southgate is likely to hand the former Rovers star an opportunity when they face Bosnia (Monday) and Iceland (Friday). The England boss will then cut his 33-man squad down to 26 ahead of flying to Germany next week.
