With the 2024/25 Championship line-up now confirmed, we have taken a look at the away trips on the schedule for Rovers supporters next season and how many miles they will rack up along the way.
BRISTOL CITY: 198 miles
John Eustace’s men endured a miserable trip to Ashton Gate near the back end of the season, suffering a 5-0 defeat with Tommy Conway and Nahki Wells both bagging braces. Rovers’ last win there came in 2019, with Bradley Johnson and Adam Armstrong getting on the scoresheet.
BURNLEY: 14.7 miles
The rivalry will continue next season following the Clarets’ relegation from the Premier League and Rovers will be hoping for a better outcome than their 3-0 defeat under Jon Dahl Tomasson in November 2022. The last win at Turf Moor came in March 2010 when David Dunn smashed home a controversial penalty.
CARDIFF: 214 miles
The points were shared last term following a tame goalless draw. Rovers ran out 1-0 winners at the Cardiff City Stadium in January 2022 thanks to Joe Rothwell, although they finished the contest with 10 men after Ryan Nyambe was given his marching orders.
COVENTRY: 128 miles
Haki Wright’s late goal condemned Rovers to a narrow defeat last season. The last victory there was a 4-0 drubbing during the 2020/21 Covid season, with Armstrong, Harvey Elliott and Sam Gallagher on target after Michael Rose was shown an early red card for the hosts.
DERBY: 119 miles
Rovers won 2-1 on their last trip to Pride Park in October 2021 after a double from Ben Brereton Diaz. It is back on the schedule after the Rams won promotion from League One, ending a two-year stay in the third tier.
HULL: 110 miles
The Tigers edged a five-goal thriller last December despite goals from Sam Szmodics and Harry Pickering. Rovers’ won at the MKM Stadium 12 months prior and it was Szmodics who got the only goal that day to ensure the three points would return to Lancashire.
LEEDS: 55.6 miles
Who could forget the stunning 1-0 win at Leeds six weeks ago? Szmodics became the first Rovers player to hit 30 goals in a single season since Alan Shearer and it proved to be a massive result in the relegation battle as Eustace’s men preserved their Championship status.
LUTON: 192 miles
A trip to Kenilworth Road is back on the agenda after the Hatters’ first season in the Premier League ended in relegation heartbreak. Rovers haven’t won there since an FA Cup fourth-round tie in January 2007 when Matt Derbyshire, Benni McCarthy and Morten Gamst Pedersen all found the back of the net.
MIDDLESBROUGH: 100 miles
Both sides failed to break the deadlock at the Riverside Stadium earlier this year. Rovers were victorious there a season prior thanks to a first-half brace from Gallagher in what proved to be one of the final games before Michael Carrick took charge of the North East outfit.
MILLWALL: 228 miles
Rovers won 2-1 in the capital last October, with Joe Rankin-Costello and Callum Brittain both on target in a spirited comeback. It has been a happy hunting ground in recent years, with a 4-3 victory on the final day of the 2022/23 campaign as the side missed out on a play-off spot by the slimmest of margins.
NORWICH: 227 miles
One of the more awkward grounds to visit but it was well worth the journey for supporters last November following a 3-1 victory. Szmodics scored either side of half time and Tyrhys Dolan also found the net, although Scott Wharton’s red card made things slightly more nervy during the final half hour.
OXFORD: 189 miles
Some Rovers fans will be familiar with the unique Kassam Stadium from the 2017/18 League One campaign and a 4-2 win thanks to Charlie Mulgrew’s brace, Marcus Antonsson and Joe Nuttall. There are three stands and a big car park behind one of the goals for anyone feeling brave!
PLYMOUTH: 309 miles
Fans who made the long trip to Home Park last term had a miserable afternoon following a 3-0 defeat against the Devon outfit. Rovers have only played there twice since a 3-1 victory in 1992 thanks to David Speedie’s hat trick.
PORTSMOUTH: 269 miles
The final club making the step up from League One after clinching the title under John Mousinho. Rovers’ last trip to Fratton Park in February 2018 was a successful one after another brace from Armstrong, although Lewis Travis was sent off in stoppage time.
PRESTON: 13.7 miles
Another local derby to look forward to next season, the points were shared against North End earlier this year despite first-half goals from Szmodics and Gallagher. Rovers are unbeaten in their last four trips to Deepdale and ran out 4-1 winners in April 2022, with Gallagher, John Buckley, Daragh Lenihan and Travis getting on the scoresheet.
QPR: 228 miles
One of several trips to the capital next term, Rovers will be hoping for a repeat of their 4-0 victory at Loftus Road last October after Arnor Sigurdsson’s brace, plus goals from Dolan and Szmodics. There was also a 3-1 victory there eight months prior, with Gallagher netting either side of half time.
SHEFFIELD UNITED: 87.5 miles
Rovers will be eager to make up for their FA Cup heartbreak at Bramall Lane in March 2023, narrowly missing out on a Wembley semi-final after Tommy Doyle struck at the death. There have been eight winless away fixtures against the Blades since a 2-1 victory in January 1994, with Shearer scoring twice that day.
SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY: 63.6 miles
Szmodics’ second-half strike wasn’t enough to prevent a 3-1 defeat at Hillsborough under Tomasson last term. Rovers’ last win there was a 5-0 thrashing during the Covid season, including a Lewis Holtby brace plus goals from Lenihan and Gallagher.
STOKE: 71.1 miles
There was a happy trip to the bet365 Stadium last November as Scott Wharton, Andrew Moran and Szmodics secured a 3-0 victory against the Potters. Rovers also won 1-0 there in November 2021, with Reda Khadra getting the decisive goal on that occasion.
SUNDERLAND: 125 miles
Another fixture that was well worth the journey last term as Eustace’s men cruised to a 5-1 win thanks to Szmodics’ brace, Ryan Hedges, Dolan and Moran. It was another crucial result in the relegation battle amid a tough run over the final weeks of the campaign.
SWANSEA: 251 miles
Rovers were beaten 2-1 by the Swans in March despite yet another goal from Szmodics on his way to the Golden Boot. The Irish international also struck during a 3-0 victory in Wales a season prior, with Brereton Diaz and Travis getting on the scoresheet that afternoon.
WATFORD: 209 miles
Arguably one of the most rewarding away trips last season, Rovers recorded a hard-fought 1-0 win against the Hornets after a moment of magic from Hedges which later won the club’s Goal of the Season prize.
WEST BROM: 106 miles
Rovers haven’t won any of their last six trips to the Hawthorns. The last victory there was in December 2010 thanks to a Nikola Kalinic brace, although the Croatian was sent off 10 minutes after his second goal.
Average one-way journey:Â 152.5 miles
Distance to attend every game: 7,016.4 miles
