Keith Downing has insisted Blackburn Rovers can cause problems for Leicester City and will take positives from Saturday's performance to the final day.

John Eustace's side missed the opportunity to secure their Championship status against Coventry City after a 1-1 draw. The result means Rovers may need something on the final day of the season, at the King Power Stadium.

However, there is a school of thought that Rovers have produced their better performances when playing on the counter-attack. Those styles of matches have brought out some impressive displays under Eustace.

Rovers won at Elland Road, took Newcastle United to extra-time, held Southampton to a goalless draw and should've taken something against Ipswich Town.

Whilst the result wasn't ideal against Coventry, the hosts had 30 attempts on goal and there were positives from the performance.

Downing wants Rovers to take those to Leicester on the final day and ensure they finish the job.

"I think we're a good counter-attacking side and we can cause teams problems," he said on the final day task.

"I think their (Leicester) mindset will be slightly different if they're going for something but they still have good players and it will be a difficult challenge for us.

"We'll have Sammie Szmodics on the pitch and that always helps. We'll go there with confidence, off the back of this the performance was important.

"The result matters but the performance was a strong one. I think we have spoken about the processes and there will be situations like today where you put 30 attempts on goal and sometimes it's a lack of quality.

"You can't fault the boy's commitment and effort to get into those areas. It was just the execution."

Rovers recorded their third clean sheet at Ewood Park this season against Coventry, two of which have come under Eustace. In total, the tally is five since he took over in February.

After conceding three avoidable goals against Sheffield Wednesday the week previous, getting back to a more solid foundation was important.

"I wouldn't say it was a priority but it had to be addressed," Downing said.

"We didn't want to concede too many goals. We did it at Bristol, then at home to Sheffield Wednesday. We have prided ourselves on keeping the door shut.

"They have done exceptionally well, not just the back five or four, the whole team has contributed to that. It was just the top end of the pitch that let us down.

"We are disappointed we didn't finish the job but it was a good performance."

The Rovers boss also felt, on instinct, that the decision to send off Liam Kitching was the right one. Sam Gallagher was through on goal and had a clear shooting opportunity had the challenge not come in.

"I think it's the right decision. He's bearing down on goal centrally," Downing said.

"I haven't seen it back but I thought it was close. I don't think there was much of a covering player behind him but again I haven't seen it back."
