Alan Shearer has revealed rumours around Blackburn Rovers the club were trying to sign Zinedine Zidane after their Premier League title win in 1995.

The former Rovers striker lifted the league trophy at Ewood Park 29 years ago and has always reflected fondly on his memories at the club. Shearer was the centrepiece of BBC's media coverage for the recent FA Cup match against Newcastle United and opened the new 'Shearer suite' ahead of kick-off.

Whilst he is perhaps more widely recognised for his time at boyhood club Newcastle, Shearer remains a prominent part of Rovers' recent history.

In the latest 'The Rest is Football' podcast with Gary Lineker and Micah Richards, the trio were asked about transfer rumours when they were playing that never came to fruition.

Shearer then revealed there were serious suggestions that France icon Zidane and Duggary, both then playing for Bordeaux, could have been on their way to Ewood Park, fresh after Rovers won the Premier League.

"When we won the league at Blackburn in 1995, there were huge rumours swirling around that we were signing Zinedine Zidane and Christophe Duggary," Shearer explained with a chuckle.

"Seriously, no word of a lie, can you imagine? We ended up signing no one. It was a serious rumour that Zidane was coming. This was in 1995.

Micah Richards added: "Actually, I remember that rumour! I do. That will have been before Real Madrid."
