Here's how The Lancashire Telegraph scored the players' performances, with a six representing par for the course.
Aynsley Pears - 9
Made a brilliant save to deny Gordon one-on-one. Then a remarkable double save in extra time. Another really impressive display, sweeping up at the back.
Dom Hyam - 8
Won every header and made sure every tackle was his.
Kyle McFadzean - 8
Rock-solid at the heart of the defence. Hasn't missed a beat since coming into the team.
Scott Wharton - 9
A brilliant display, not just defensively, but on the ball too. Hard to argue that he has been Rovers' best centre-back this season.
Callum Brittain - 7
Kept Gordon quiet on the left and handled Barnes well too.
Andrew Moran - 8
Played in a deeper midfield role and he wasn't afraid to get on the ball. His best display for a while.
John Buckley - 9
Absolutely fantastic all evening. On the ball, he dictated play and was imperative to Rovers getting out from defence. Off the ball, he was equally superb.
Ben Chrisene - 8
His best display in a Rovers shirt. Did not look overawed by the occasion one bit.
Tyrhys Dolan - 8
Picked up some lovely pockets of space behind the Newcastle midfield. Almost scored with a brilliant low drive that was brilliantly saved.
Sam Szmodics - 8
Ran his heart out as you'd expect from Szmodics. Predatory instincts to turn in the rebound of Markanday's shot for 1-1.
Sam Gallagher - 6
Battled hard up against the Newcastle defenders in the first half. Taken off at half time after appearing to feel his calf at the end of the first 45.
Substitutes:
Arnor Sigurdsson (Gallagher, 45') - 7
Worked the line well after going down the middle following the change of formation. Good run for the equaliser.
Yasin Ayari (Buckley, 62') - 8
Grew into the match and produced some nice touches. Almost won the match with a shot in the final minutes. His best display since coming in.
Jake Garrett (Moran, 62') - 7
Won plenty of tackles after coming on. Good composure on the ball.
Dilan Markanday (Dolan, 62') - 8
Looked very lively on the right wing after coming on. Brilliant strike that rattled the crossbar and created the equaliser.
Billy Koumetio (McFadzean, 72') - 7
Came on for his Rovers debut. Looked a bit rusty at first but then grew into the match and picked up the pace.
Unused substitutes: Wahlstedt, Pickering, Finneran, Telalovic.
Referee: Jarred Gillet
Attendance: 22,730
