Blackburn Rovers have confirmed the departure of Jon Dahl Tomasson by 'mutual consent' with John Eustace ready to take over at Ewood Park.

The Danish head coach held talks with the board of directors over the last 48 hours and it's been confirmed he is no longer the head coach with immediate effect. Assistant boss Remy Reijnierse has also departed.

Tomasson had 16 months left to run on the three-year contract he signed in 2022. The relationship between the board and the former AC Milan striker had become untenable.

The club blocked Tomasson from speaking to the media last Friday after the end of the January transfer window. The Rovers head coach then delivered an explosive post-match press conference after the 2-1 defeat to Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

Frustrations with the January transfer window and, in particular, the failed registration of Duncan McGuire, has been viewed as the final straw for Tomasson. The relationship has been fractured since the summer when the club dropped a 'hand grenade' after the budget was cut due to Venky's problems in India.

On the pitch, things had taken a turn for the worse too. Rovers have won one of their last 11 Championship games, taking five points from a possible 33. Considering they were seventh on December 1, the season has quickly unwound and they now find themselves in a relegation battle.

Eustace could take charge of Saturday's match against Stoke City, a crucial match in Rovers' hopes of staying clear of the bottom three. The Potters are one of three teams between Rovers and the drop zone and are similarly out of form.

If not, it will be a caretaker team of David Lowe and Damien Johnson with Eustace watching on in the background.
