Blackburn Rovers have brought an end to one of the most spectacular deadline day transfer stories by completing the loan signing of Duncan McGuire, with an option to buy.

Rovers were embroiled in one of the most remarkable deadline-day sagas but have ended it with their man in a blue and a white shirt. A deal was agreed in principle on Wednesday and the forward flew over to the UK.

However, Blackburn were forced to pull out of the permanent deal due to financial concerns. Adam Wharton's move to Crystal Palace was in doubt and the club, therefore, wouldn't have had funds to pay the transfer fee.

As a result, McGuire arrived in the UK without a club to sign for. He spent most of the day in a hotel in Sheffield with Sheffield Wednesday vying for his signature.

With Wharton's move signed and completed, and confirmed later in the day, Rovers managed to resurrect a move for the American striker, this time on loan with an option to buy.

McGuire hot-footed his way to the Brockhall Senior Training Centre and completed his medical, media work and signing the documents before the 11pm deadline.

Rovers have the option to buy the 22-year-old at the end of the season. He will take up one of their GBE slots, with Championship clubs allowed four players who would not otherwise qualify for a work permit.

“We are really pleased to have secured the signing of Duncan McGuire,” said Rovers’ Director of Football Gregg Broughton.

“A Nebraska boy, whose rise to the MLS is a great story and now we hope to continue that trajectory with Blackburn Rovers.

“Quick, with good movement and a great finisher, Duncan has all of the attributes needed to follow in the footsteps of the many great strikers who have worn our famous colours.

“I have to give our recruitment team great credit for identifying him, tracking his progress and convincing him that this was the perfect next move for him in his career.”
