Jon Dahl Tomasson has pointed to a lack of experience in his squad as the main factor behind their poor defensive record.

Blackburn Rovers have now conceded 40 goals in the Championship, a record only bettered by rock-bottom Rotherham United, who have conceded 47 times. 

Individual errors and a lack of structure have been the main cause of Rovers' defensive issues. In particular, they have struggled late on in matches, conceding 18 times in the final 15 minutes of league games.

The manner of the three goals at Huddersfield were quite symptomatic of Rovers' issues throughout the season. An individual error, on this occasion by Leopold Wahlstedt, a counter-attack and another mistake, giving the ball away in a dangerous area and being punished.

When quizzed on Rovers' concerning goals against column, compared to last season where their record was middling for the division, Tomasson pointed to a lack of experience and injuries in his squad.

It's well documented that Blackburn's oldest player is 28 and they didn't replace the experience of Daniel Ayala or Bradley Dack. Dom Hyam has also spent two months on the sidelines, which has also had an impact.

"I think some of the important players have been injured and we are quite young, we shouldn't forget that," Tomasson told The Lancashire Telegraph.

"We are one of the youngest squads in the league. There is nothing wrong with that but then you are getting used to it, you're making more mistakes.

"If you have Premier League experience, which a lot of clubs have in this league, then you're doing the right things, at the right time. 

"That's a lot of time the difficulty. We have conceded late on in games and that is experience. 

That's a very important part of football, being able to see a game out and do the right things and manage the game until the end. Experience players are quite good at that."

Rovers tried to sign Danny Batth in the summer from Sunderland with Tomasson and Director of Football Gregg Broughton identifying him as the man to bolster the defence.

However, they were unable to strike a deal on the length of his deal. Batth wanted a two-year deal whilst the owners would only sanction a one-year contract. In the end, Batth signed for Norwich City on the terms he had desired.

Centre-back is an area Rovers are expected to look at in the January transfer window, though resources will be limited.
