Jon Dahl Tomasson believes a couple of fresh faces in January would give Blackburn Rovers a boost but wouldn't specify which position he'd like to strengthen.

The Rovers head coach admitted his squad 'needs help' after the 4-0 defeat to Southampton last weekend. Considering the average age of the squad and the terrible luck they've had with injuries, it's a fair summation.

The January transfer window opens in 10 days and new signings haven't been ruled out, albeit the club's financial difficulties have been well documented. 

When asked what sort of areas he might like to add to, Tomasson again reiterated how new blood would give the squad, the fan base and the club as a whole a nice boost.

"I never complain about the players we have, just the players we don't have," he told The Lancashire Telegraph. "I think it would be healthy for the fans to give them a boost with a couple of fresh faces.

"We all know it's been difficult for the club, it's not my department. I am here to coach the players but I think it would be useful and healthy to get a couple of players in, yes.

"If you look at the squad, you can work out where we are a little more stretched than other positions. Normally you'd have more bodies than we have in certain positions."

Saturday's match against Watford will mark the halfway stage of the Championship season, with Rovers able to climb to 34 points if they can beat the Hornets.

Performances have generally exceeded the points tally and that is how Tomasson feels after half a season. 

"I think we have fewer points than what we deserve, I know in football you don't always get what you deserve," he said. "I think if you look at the performance in this period, I think we are lacking maybe five points.

"We've seen a young team and a squad that is stretched. Young players who are involved, getting minutes and developing over this period.

"We are only halfway and then we have the New Year after this great Christmas period and the games will be spread out more which is nice.

"This team is doing its best to do the right things, there are some great players. We want to win games, that's important, it's about winning, but if you perform better than the opponent, the chances of winning are better."

Watford will be stern opponents on Saturday after collecting 21 points from their last 11 Championship games, the fifth highest tally in that time. 

The Hornets battered Preston North End 5-1 last weekend at Deepdale and pose plenty of threats in transition, according to Tomasson.

"Watford was probably one of the sides that was most difficult. We scored a great transition goal and we are missing seven players from that game that can't start tomorrow.

"They're a good team, they have top-class players. They got a good result at Preston so it will be an interesting game. Hopefully, we can give our fans an early Christmas present.

"We know in transition they are good, they have great individual players with quality. 

"They create chances, they shoot a lot from distance but every team also has a weakness. We are looking to find out what they are and trying to exploit it. We want to start this period tomorrow in the right way."

Rovers will train on Christmas Day, early in the morning to allow plenty of family time for the players. With Huddersfield a short drive into Yorkshire, the team will then travel on Boxing Day to the game.

"We will train on the 25th, everyone will come," Tomasson said. "We did it last year before Sunderland.

"We will train early in the morning, 9:30. Then they have time for family time during the day, which is important. Huddersfield is close by so we can travel on the 26th without staying over."
