A Westholme School student, who learned football the hard way by playing in boys’ teams, has been signed by Blackburn Rovers Women’s Under 21s.

Matilda Crawshaw, 17, has only been playing football for five years but has already made a name for herself in the women’s game.

In her short career she has played for junior women’s teams at Great Harwood, Fleetwood and Manchester United.

Matilda, from Baxenden, is also an accomplished athlete who has represented Lancashire Schools and Hyndburn Athletics Club in the 100 metres and sprint relay teams.

Now in her second year at Westholme’s Inspired Sixth Form, Matilda said: “When I was studying at The Hollins in Accrington the boys I knew there encouraged me to take up football and I started playing with them.

“I was the only girl in the boys’ school team and again was the only girl in Huncoat United’s team where they made an exception to allow me to play.”

England’s Lionesses have given Matilda, whose ambition is to be a professional footballer, lots of inspiration in her development and she says the player she admires most is Manchester City and England star Alex Greenwood.

While playing for Fleetwood, Matilda was scouted by Blackburn Rovers but as she was considering their offer Manchester United stepped in to snap her up for their Under-16s team which went on to win the championship.

During her time at United she was sponsored by sports charity Dan’s Trust which supports up-and-coming sports people in the North West.

Matilda, who is studying PE, Criminology and Art at A-level, said: “I spent a year at Manchester United playing mainly on the right wing. But I found the set up there wasn’t really for me and at the end of the one-year contract I returned to Fleetwood.

“I am now delighted Blackburn have made me an offer to join their Under 21s. It’s a high standard and gives me the chance to compete against more experienced players. I’m really happy to be given the chance.”

Lee Purdy, director of sport at Westholme School, said: “We believe in helping every individual to fulfill their potential – not just academically, but holistically.

"We are delighted that Matilda is continuing to develop her sporting skills and that her talent has been recognised by Blackburn Rovers.”
