Harry Leonard is targeting more goal-scoring success for Blackburn Rovers as he tries to cement a regular place in the team.

The forward began the season with four successive Championship starts, scoring on his full debut against West Brom. On Wednesday night, he netted his third of the season to clinch the three points against Birmingham City.

Leonard was an early substitute, replacing Tyrhys Dolan after only 15 minutes. The latter's impressive form has kept the 20-year-old out of the side after he missed a month due to a calf injury.

But with Dolan now absent for the trip to Sheffield Wednesday this weekend, there is a big opportunity for Leonard to start and try to keep the short. Scoring more frequently and offering what Jon Dahl Tomasson wants from his centre-forward will be key to that.

"As a striker, you always want to score goals, to do it like that and celebrate in front of Blackburn End was brilliant," Leonard told RoversTV.

"I think it does make it a bit more special. Scoring on my debut was surreal but that one is right up there tonight.

"I think you have to be patient, you can't get too frustrated and the manager has been speaking to me constantly about that. He wants me to do the right things in training, he explains what he wants from me and I have got that trust.

"I thought I did a lot of what he wants from me against Birmingham and I have to build on that. He tells me what he wants and drills it into me every day. Adding goals, that's a bonus."

That 4-2 win over the Blues back up an impressive return from the international break for Rovers, having beaten Stoke City 3-0 at the weekend.

It's moved them up to seventh and to within two points of the play-off places. Whilst goals have been an issue this season, creating chances haven't been, and the seven netted in the last two outings will hopefully be the start of more to come.

"I think to do that after the Stoke game, scoring three there and four against Birmingham, when you score that amount of goals, you expect to win again. It's great to do it back-to-back.

"I think the clinical edge was the missing ingredient earlier in the season. It's down to repetition, getting in the right areas, the amount of time you get there, it's a matter of time before it clicks. That is showing at the minute.

"The confidence is high, we have to take it game by game, we are not getting ahead of ourselves."

"It was a big relief to get the three points, he added, reflecting on the midweek triumph. "Obviously, it was a great start to the second half but we let them back in it with the two goals. When that fourth one went in, it was just relief.

"I think the boys have a great relationship on the pitch and when it's free-flowing like that, we can give any team a game. We showed in that second half how good we can be.

"It's what you want to play in, a team that can, at times, play others off the park. It was free-flowing and we scored goals, it's what the gaffer wants from us and we are trying to do it as best as possible.

"That's as good as it's been, we saw some great bits of play. It was going into the last 10 minutes a bit shaky, Leo (Wahlstedt) pulled off some great saves. The lads at the back, defended well, Hayden (Carter and Hilly).

Sheffield Wednesday are Rovers' next challenge. Although they're rock-bottom of the Championship, they collected an impressive draw against Leicester City on Wednesday night.

"They have got good players, they will be hard to beat as a lot of the teams are in this league," Leonard insisted. "We'll go with a game plan and try to do our best to get the three points."
