Blackburn Rovers' hope of qualifying for the knockout rounds of the Premier League International Cup were dealt a blow despite the excellent performance of 15-year-old Igor Tyjon.
Mike Sheron's side were beaten 5-3 by Jong PSV in an entertaining eight-goal thriller which ebbed and flowed throughout. Rovers found themselves 1-0 down early on but rallied to lead 2-1 just before the break.
PSV drew level on the stroke of half-time but Jake Batty had Rovers ahead once more with 20 minutes to go. But a late rally from the Dutch side saw Sheron's side ship three goals in the closing stages to lose 5-3.
That puts their chances of qualification in doubt with two defeats and one win from their three games. They lost 2-0 to Hertha Berlin in their first game before a late win against OGC Nice at Ewood Park last time out.

Although there was disappointment on the night, the bright spark was schoolboy Tyjon, making his Under-21s debut for the club, on as an early substitute. He scored one and assisted two on a memorable night for the youngster.
Harrison Wood was taken off after just six minutes, giving Tyjon the chance to impress. Rovers were behind before the ten-minute mark though, with Iggy Houben fired into the far corner from the edge of the area.
Rovers rallied though and levelled mid-way through the first half. It was a brilliant individual goal from Tyjon, who anticipated a bouncing ball on the half-way line and beat the defender to it, putting him clean through on goal.
One-vs-one, his first shot came off the base of the post but he converted the rebound, hitting the ball into the ground and over a covering defender.
The teenager was proving a real handful for defenders up to five years his elder and his clever movement earned Blackburn a penalty and the chance to lead the game.
James Edmondson stepped up from 12 yards and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, placing his spot-kick down the middle. That lead lasted until stoppage time at the end of the first half when Julian Kwaaitaal’s shot deflected over the Blackburn goalkeeper.
In the eyes of Sheron, that equaliser was perhaps and undeserved but he would have been delighted with his side's response. Jake Batty, playing in a higher left-wing role, fired Rovers ahead faster latching on to a clever pass from that man, technically still a boy, Tyjon.
So with 65 minutes on the clock, Blackburn had the lead but PSV rallied and punished tired legs. Elvic Jager scored the visitor's second deflected effort of the night to make it 3-3.
They then restored their advantage in a topsy-turvy game, with Jevon Simons curling the ball in with his left foot for 4-3. In the 83rd minute, the three points were sealed when a corner was volleyed in at the back post by Robin Van Duiven.
Reflecting on the result, Sheron felt that his side competed for large portions of the game and was delighted with the application.
He conceded that as they tired, the game became fraught and that allowed PSV to take advantage with their late rally.
“It’s been a tough season for the lads, but they tried to really apply what was asked of them tonight,” Sheron told RoversTV post-match.
“They were committed, enthusiastic and were together. I felt, after the first-half performance, we didn’t really deserve to go into half-time at 2-2.
“It would have been a positive to go in with the advantage at half-time as it would have given the lads that belief, that reassurance.
“Maybe that half-time team talk would have been slightly different, but I really felt we were committed, the press was together and it was intense. We were very proud of what the lads produced.
“I thought it was a really good performance. We stuck to the principles, we created some really good chances and could have had a few more goals," he added
“We didn’t give them too many chances, but they had that bit of quality to take theirs, some of which came with a couple of deflections.
“Late on, I thought we tired and lost that belief, which is where we have to try and get better."
Rovers have endured a difficult season in the Premier League 2, winning once and collecting four points from their first eight games. Next up, they face Norwich City away on December 1.
In terms of the Premier League International Cup, they have one fixture left to play. Sparta Prague will be their final opponent, with the game scheduled to take place on January 17.
