Jon Dahl Tomasson felt Blackburn Rovers deserved something against Preston North End as they fell to a late 2-1 defeat.

Liam Lindsay headed the winner for he visitors in the 90th minute to condemn Rovers to a fifth Championship defeat at Ewood Park this season.

It had been an even game with both teams trading blows. Sam Szmodics' tenth of the season cancelled out Alan Browne's opener with both sides hitting the woodwork in an even encounter.

But Lindsay's late winner was the 11th goal that the team have conceded after the 75th minute this season. Tomasson was frustrated with the result and felt his team created enough opportunities to take something, if not win the game.

"We are extremely disappointed to lose the game," Tomasson said. "I don't think we deserved to lose the game.

"If you look at our performance, I think we were the better team and created more chances than the opponent. I thought we lacked a few clear chances, we missed runs in-behind.

"When we did that, we created chances immediately. We know Preston are very good at passing long, winning second balls and set plays, transition moment.

"There were two moments where we didn't deal with those but this young group is giving everything. We are disappointed to concede that late in the game.

"We are disappointed, I don't like to lose games. We are learning on the job a little bit. On the other hand, this group showed good character and fought until the end. We did create chances to win the game and if you look at the possession we had, we should create more clear chances but I felt there was still enough to win the game."

After a firts-half where Rovers had struggled to create clear-cut chances, despite hitting the bar twice, they came out for the second half all guns blazing. Szmodics scored five minutes after the restart and Blackburn had Preston on the back foot.

The key was more runs in-behind, with the team coming towards the ball too often in the first half. That was Tomasson's view on too and he revealed they had spoken extensively about more runners at half-time.

"That was pleasing, the start to the second half," he said. "We did some of the right things, more runs in-behind which we lacked in the first half, especially in the final third.

"Every time we played and ran, we created something. That was the key to the game and we should have done that better in the first half but we still hit the bar in the first half.

"Sam took his goal very well, he is playing like a senior player and helping the team, working hard. If you look at our squad, our starting XI is one of the youngest in the league

"We like working with youngsters and developing them. Sometimes they make mistakes, learning on the job, that comes with the age."
