Scott Wharton missed Blackburn Rovers' win over Cardiff City with a minor hamstring problem.

The defender was not involved in the matchday squad after reporting the issue on Saturday morning. Although the injury is not thought to be serious, Rovers chose not to take any risks.

It meant 17-year-old defender Tom Atcheson was named on the bench for the first time in the Championship as well as fellow academy graduate Patrick Gamble.

Tomasson will find out the full extent of Wharton's injury over the weekend but is hopeful it will not be a serious issue.

"He came in this morning with a bit of a sore hamstring," Tomasson told The Lancashire Telegraph. "We didn't want to risk it.

"I called Pat Gamble to get him on the bench, a good experience for him to be involved at this level again. It shouldn't be a major thing, he's already had the scan, I don't know what the report says but I'll get it later on.

"We had young Tom on the bench, a 17-year-old boy which was a good experience for him too."

Rovers have kept back-to-back clean sheets, conceding once in their last three games. That has coincided with James Hill's inclusion in the starting XI at right-back.

He's offered the team an extra defensive mindset in that role whilst giving the team much-needed height to compete for set-pieces. Tomasson believes he has done well since coming into the team whilst the individual errors have stopped.

"I think we gave away unnecessary chances away before and that is football," Tomasson said on the changes. "They're quite good in this league, the opposition, and they can score goals.

"The height of James also gives you more quality in set-pieces. You need three or four good headers on the pitch when you put together a side. James has done well."
