Jon Dahl Tomasson is 'not surprised' by Blackburn Rovers' league position after a run of three Championship defeats.

Rovers were beaten 4-1 by Leicester City on Sunday in a match that was closely contested until the final 15 minutes. A penalty from Kelechi Inheanacho and a strike from Keinan Dewsbury-Hall gave Enzo Maresca's side a larger margin of victory.

It was another decent display from Rovers but yielded no results. Concerningly, they've now conceded 16 goals in their last five matches, having managed just four in four to start the season.

Tomasson is not alarmed by his side slipping to 18 in the standings after nine games and believes it's realistic for the squad he has available. He also conceded that the team must be 'proud' in their defending after giving away soft set-piece goals in their last three matches.

"I think it is realistic where we are, I am not surprised by it," he said when asked about the slump in form. "If you look at the performance, the way we play, we're playing some extremely good football.

"We are not scoring the chances that we have. We have to do that better and defend, for example, today, a corner ball better, a throw-in better. A penalty is difficult to do better.

"First of all, in those situations, you have to sense danger and be proactive. You have to throw your body in front of the ball and not turn.

"All those things, it is about defending and being proud of defending. That's a very important thing in football."

After a summer of struggling against the financial restrictions set on the club by geopolitical issues in India, Rovers again look to be light up front. Without a proven goal-scorer to convert their chances, it could be a season of frustration.

Their more experienced forward players, Sam Gallagher and Ryan Hedges, are both long-term absentees, whilst Harry Leonard and Niall Ennis are also injured.

Tomasson again referenced the lack of replacement for Ben Brereton Diaz and Bradley Dack as well comments made by Chief Executive Steve Waggott in pre-season.

"The players have done excellent and we shouldn't forget this side regarding numbers and experienced players has changed a lot," he said. "Those who are experienced players are 20 years old.

"That plays a part. We know we lost proven goal-scorers with Brereton Diaz and Dack. Nothing wrong with that but it's the facts.

"As our CEO said, it's about staying in the league and developing players. The summer had an impact on the rest of the year but we are ambitious and we want to do better. We want to go and win every game as we are doing.

"A young Vardy in my team wouldn't be bad, huh? We are missing a few players in that position and we lost proven goal-scorers. The others are not proven at this level.

"They work hard, they want to become better, they have a great attitude and discipline. They showed that even when they were behind in the end."

Despite admitting the need to improve in defence, Tomasson conceded Rovers were battling against a top Championship side. He thinks Leicester will probably go on to win the league with a squad packed full of Premier League talent.

"We were missing some width on the left-hand side. When you play a Premier League side, they can defend as well," he explained. "You have to be careful not to lose the ball in the wrong moments.

"We tried to play quick and there was a couple of moments where we almost were through, the most difficult thing in football is creating chances. We have done that for ages and created a lot of chances over a long period.

"They're an excellent side and probably the champions of this league. A Premier League team."
