Blackburn Rovers return to Carabao Cup action on Wednesday night with Jon Dahl Tomasson set to ring the changes against Cardiff City.

Rovers have beaten Walsall and Harrogate Town to reach the third round of the competition. They've impressed in both games, beating the latter 8-0 in the last round.

Once again, Tomasson will give players the opportunity to try and catch the eye and offer valuable match minutes to those that need them. After back-to-back Championship defeats, an impressive performance could see a few players work their way into the thinking for Leicester.

Here's The Lancashire Telegraph's best guess on how Rovers might line-up against Cardiff City in the Carabao Cup.

Goalkeeper

Leo Walhstedt will be in goal at Ewood Park. It’s another opportunity for the summer signing to apply pressure on Aynsley Pears for the gloves.

Defence

In defence, it could be all change. Joe Rankin-Costello, James Hill and Scott Wharton will all come into the side to freshen things up. Jake Batty is in line to replace Harry Pickering at left-back.

For Hill and Wharton, they’ll be looking to stake a claim on a defence that conceded seven goals last week. Rankin-Costello is unfortunate to be out of the side due to the form of Callum Brittain.

Midfield

Sondre Tronstad is a certainty to come into the side and will be hopeful of taking his opportunity to work himself into the side. Jake Garrett is also likely to start alongside him.

The third midfield spot is interesting. Arnor Sigurdsson could play in the Sam Szmodics goal to get him further up to match speed. Zak Gilsenan could be an option centrally too.

Attack

It feels like an ideal opportunity for Semir Telalovic to start up front and get some minutes up to his speed. With Harry Leonard starting two games this week, it’s a good chance for fans to see the Rovers striker.

On the right, it’ll be Dilan Markanday after injury to Ryan Hedges. It’s a big opportunity for the former Spurs winger to get a run of games on the right wing.

The left could be Gilsenan, perhaps Tyrhys Dolan who has been a substitute in both games this week. Tomasson has options for that final midfield spot/wide left attacker.

Blackburn Rovers (4-3-3): Walhstedt; Rankin-Costello, Hill, Wharton, Batty; Tronstad, Sigurdsson, Garrett; Markanday, Gilsenan, Telalovic.
