Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick has praised Blackburn Rovers for their 'chaotic' approach after they beat his side 2-1.

Jon Dahl Tomasson's side secured their third win of the Championship season with a deserved victory at Ewood Park. Rovers were guilty of wasting big chances and should've been well out of sight before Matt Crooks pulled one back with 40 minutes to go.

Sam Szmodics had put Blackburn in control but the final half-hour was a wide open contest. Both teams had huge opportunities to add to the scoreline which was reflected in the final shot count, 36.

Carrick felt Boro could've got something from the game after coming to life after their goal but conceded they 'left themselves too much to do'. He was happy to praise Rovers, highlighting how dangerous they looked in attack.

“I’m disappointed, obviously," he told The Northern Echo. "We are after results and there is no hiding from that.

"I’m frustrated, but I feel for the boys. I couldn’t really ask much more from the boys in terms of their effort.

"It was a chaotic game with chances everywhere because it was such an open game. That suited them more than us more than us, the way they play.

"They’re good at it as well, so credit to them. Second half I thought we were right in it and comeback from the setback again. We’re just giving ourselves too much to do going behind in games.

"Today, you have to credit them because that’s the way they like to play, and they’re dangerous when they do. I thought there were spells where we did have an element of control, but it was an open game in the main, where both teams looked like they could score at times."

He added: “It’s at the two ends of the pitch where it counts ultimately. It’s a team thing, definitely not an individual thing.

"We have to defend and attack as a team and it’s something we know we have to get better at to tip the fine margins throughout the games in our favour.

"We’re not picking up enough points, but we don’t feel there is much on those scales where we can’t tip them in the right direction. At the moment, we’re just going through a period where we’re coming off on the wrong side of things.

"I honestly don't think we've been too far away. I think results show that. Each game, we haven't been miles off by any stretch but it's those fine details we have to change and put in our favour."
