Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly shown “late interest” in signing John Buckley on a loan deal.

The Owls are one of several clubs who have looked at the 23-year-old midfielder along with  Sunderland and Millwall, according to The Sheffield Star.

Buckley bagged a brace against Harrogate in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night and was also on target against Walsall in the opening round.

However, his only appearance in the Championship so far this season came off the bench for the final few minutes at Rotherham.

Earlier this week, Tomasson insisted Buckley was still part of his plans and that he is not trying to force out the midfielder.

“At the end of the day, it is about doing all the right things in training and in the games,” the manager explained.

“He will have plenty of opportunities to train and play in games because I arrange games every week so every player is up to speed.

“It is also sometimes about the balance on the bench. John knows exactly what I want from him and it is just about doing it.

“I am not trying to get John out of the building, not at all. We need John as well.”

Rovers made Bournemouth defender James Hill their sixth signing of the summer late last night, arriving on a season-long loan from Bournemouth.

The England Under-21 international bolsters Tomasson's defensive options, with Sam Barnes set for another lengthy spell out of action.

Dom Hyam and Hayden Carter have started at the heart of defence in recent weeks, with Scott Wharton getting a couple of opportunities in the Carabao Cup.
