Rovers recorded their biggest-ever away victory against Harrogate in the Carabao Cup second round, but which players caught they eye?
LEO WAHLSTEDT…7
A promising debut from the Swedish goalkeeper following his move from Norway. Didn’t have much to do in the second half but made a couple of good saves in the opening 45 minutes. Looks composed on the ball when building from the back.
PAT GAMBLE…6.5
Had a tough task making his debut in an unfamiliar right-back position but did a solid job. Might get more opportunities in the squad in the near future while Rankin-Costello is out of action through injury.
SCOTT WHARTON…6.5
Generally looked solid at the heart of defence but allowed Muldoon to get in behind at one stage in the first half. Finds himself in a tough position due to the thriving partnership between Hyam and Carter, which has carried on from last season.
DOM HYAM…6.5
Was the only player to keep his place in the side from the victory at Watford last weekend and wore the captain’s armband in Travis’ absence. Made a few important clearances due to good positioning.
HARRY PICKERING…6.5
Returned to action after serving a one-game suspension following his sending off against Hull. Got plenty of opportunities to get forward and join the attack, delivering some decent balls into the box.
SONDRE TRONSTAD…6.5
Lost possession in the middle of the pitch a few times and still seems to be building up his sharpness after joining from Vitesse Arnhem over the summer. Has shown glimpses of what he can bring to the team.
JOHN BUCKLEY…8
Was challenged by Tomasson to show what he can do in the build-up to the game and certainly delivered. Made an intelligent run for his first goal and kept his cool to slot home from the spot after the break.
JAKE GARRETT…8
Built on his promising display against Walsall in the opening round. Took his goal well and caused the Harrogate backline plenty of problems in the final third, combining effectively with those around him.
DILAN MARKANDAY…7
Looked lively on the right flank and got his reward on the stroke of half time, finding the bottom corner with a low drive. Faces a tough battle with Ryan Hedges for a place in the starting line-up after the Welshman’s goal at Watford.
SAM GALLAGHER…7.5
Looked sharp on his first start of the campaign and will be keen to push on as he build up his fitness following an injury in pre-season. Provided a cool finish to slot home after getting in behind the hosts’ backline.
ANDY MORAN…7
Showed composure to set up Buckley’s first goal after going round the goalkeeper and keeping the chance alive. Clearly has potential and will only improve with time as he gels with his new team-mates and learns what is expected from him in Tomasson’s system.
