Under-21 boss Mike Sheron hopes more youngsters can make the step up to the first-team picture at Rovers.
Jon Dahl Tomasson has already proven he is willing to put his trust in youth, and there have been plenty of success stories for the club’s Academy in recent memory.
Sheron has been encouraged by his side’s start to the season - having drawn 3-3 at West Brom before beating Leicester 4-1 - and hopes Rovers’ young talent can keep progressing over the coming season.
“It is always nice to get your first win of the season, but I must admit I felt that we played really well at West Brom, and deserved to win that game,” he told the club website.
“To follow it up with another really positive performance, with quite a few lads making their first starts of the season, was great to see.
“Hopefully, going forward, we will have quite a bit of competition for places and the lads can keep pushing each other to try and make sure we get one or two lads up and around the first team.
“Even though we scored four, our finishing needs to be better. We created some really top chances, which we should have done better with.
“It is great that we were getting into those positions, which is something we have been critical of in the past, but we are getting loads of opportunities to get in and around the box. Then it’s just about that composure and decision-making about how we finish it off.
“Whoever we are competing against, we want to dominate the ball as much as we can and create chances and we also know what our roles are out of possession as well.”
Georgie Gent, Junior Nsangou, Charlie Weston and Ethan Walker were all on target against the Foxes at Leyland.
“Our average age against West Brom was probably 19 and I think it was very similar, if not younger, against Leicester,” he continued.
“We know we’ve got a good Academy and we have got some good players. It is about making sure they do it more consistently and with a bit more belief and purpose at times.
“We just have to make sure we illustrate what our principles are and keep trying to show them as often as we can.”
