Harry Leonard is determined to build on his dream start and become established at Rovers over the coming season.
The young forward scored his first senior goal during the 2-1 win against West Brom on the opening day, slotting home after some good work by Sam Szmodics.
He also came off the bench during the 4-3 win against Walsall for the final 20 minutes and nearly forced Jackson Smith into a costly error with his pressing from the front, but the goalkeeper just about managed to clear the danger.
Leonard is eager to keep working hard and making the most of his opportunities in the first team as he aims to build on his appearances during the final stages of last term.
“I think last season was a bit on and off,” he said. “I felt like I was ready at different times but the manager has been patient with me. I really hope this season is one where I can kick on.
“When I play, I have just got to show what I can do and what the manager wants from me.
“Just doing what I can for the team, pressing off the ball and making sure I’m, reliable in possession. If I can get some goals it will be good as well.”
The youngster put pen to paper over a new four-year deal at Ewood Park prior to the friendly against Girona last month.
Getting on the scoresheet against the Baggies was a special moment for Leonard, who has been in Rovers’ Academy ranks since Under-10 level.
“That was the aim, to start with three points,” he added. “To get a goal has just topped it off. When it hit the back of the net, there is no feeling like it. I was delighted.
“You have got to work hard for the team. It is a lot different to youth team football. The fans pay a lot of money to come and watch and you have to put those yards in to get the three points.”
Leonard shared the pitch with Adam Wharton on the opening day, something he has done many times over the years at various youth levels.
The forward believes his team-mate has the talent to go a long way in the game as long as he keeps putting in the hard yards and remains level-headed.
“I was out there with Adam at the end as well,” he said. “I have been playing with his since I was 10 years old. It was a really good day for me and my family.
“He is good. He is just unique, I have never played with anyone like Adam. I think if he keeps his head on the ground, he can go to wherever he wants in football.”
Leonard is part of an exciting group of youngsters at Rovers and says the club’s belief in youth was one of the main reasons he wanted to stay at Ewood Park for the long term.
“There are loads of good young players,” he stated. “In pre-season, loads have got opportunities and been around the first team.
“It is only going to help for the future. The Academy has produced a lot of players so the more, the better.”
