Rovers are interested in a move for Iceland attacker Arnor Sigurdsson.
Reports have surfaced in his native country that Rovers are keen on a move for the 24-year-old.
The Lancashire Telegraph can confirm Rovers' interest, but it is a complex situation surrounding the Icelandic international.
Sigurdsson is on the books of CSKA Moscow, but he took advantage of a FIFA amendment last summer that allowed him to suspend his contract with the Russian club.
That saw him return to his first club, Swedish side IFK Norrköping, where he spent the 2022/23 season.
The attacker, who can play across the front line, scoring nine times in 15 appearances during his time in Sweden.
Last month FIFA extended the ability ‘to unilaterally suspend employment contracts’ until June 2024, while a change to Football Association rules surrounding work permits has opened up England as potential avenue for the attacker.
Sigurdsson would likely have been prevented from making the move to England under the previous rules, but a change this week opens up that avenue.
In an interview this week with an Icelandic publication, Sigurdsson said: "The dream is to go to England, that's the biggest. I have to look at the options I have and make the right choice.
“It (the FIFA rule) of course facilitates the situation I'm in, I have one year left on my contract with CSKA.”
Sigurdsson is currently away with the national side, but won’t be able to add to his 27 caps when Iceland face Slovakia this weekend due to a groin injury.
That would also delay any potential move to Rovers, yet a change to work permit rules does now open up that possibility.
He has scored 13 goals and contributed eight assists in 87 appearances for the Russian club who he hasn’t now played for since May 2021.
Sigurdsson also spent time on loan at Serie A side Venezia in 2021/22, and it was ahead of that he signed an extension to his contract through to 2024.
He initially signed a five-year contract in 2018 when joining CSKA for a fee in the region of 4m Euros.
