DINO Radice said he could take no pleasure from Blackburn’s record-breaking 190-0 victory against Kirkby Lonsdale.
On an incredible day at Ramsgreave Drive, Blackburn scored 30 unanswered tries – with Connor Scrivens scoring a double hat-trick – while 14 different players all touched down.
While some national reports suggested it was a new British record and just short of the world’s biggest win, Radice said that was of no interest to him or his players.
“Victories like that, you don’t learn anything, either as the winning team or the losing team,” said Radice. “I didn’t enjoy it all but we had to do what we had to do.
“Had this been a meaningless game, I would have put our Second team out and would have definitely stopped at around the 70-point mark.
“But we are going for promotion and this season, only one team goes up. So we just had to keep going to try and improve our points difference.”
Blackburn averaged a try less than every three minutes with Alex Smith scoring five of them while there were hat-tricks for Leon Simpson and Josh Jarrold who finished with a personal points haul of 39 points as he also kicked 12 conversions.
Jack Granby, Lee Ferrier and Jack Moon all scored two each while Alex Evans, Lewis Kincart, Jamie Brookes, Christian Joyner, Connor Johnson, Sammy Russell got in on the act - as did Leon Fifield who added eight conversions to his try.
The victory sees Blackburn remain in second place in Regional 1 West but they have slashed title rivals Lymm’s seemingly untouchable points difference advantage to just 33 – and they have a game in hand.
Some records suggest the victory topped the previous best score line of 177-3 in December 1996 when Norwich defeated Eccles and Attleborough in a Norfolk Cup match.
But it comes up just short of a world record which remains in Denmark where Comet defeated Lindo 194-0 back in 1973.
But none of that interests Radice.
“I read the Daily Telegraph reporting those facts but comments underneath suggested there had been bigger wins but that is of no interest to us,” he said.
“It is just nice that people are talking about Blackburn rugby club. Our Second team is going well in their division, they are currently second in a very tough league and our mini and youth section is thriving. So it is good to see us getting some extra attention.”
But Radice revealed it hasn’t all been positive with some hitting out at the team for running in so many tries.
“People who are slagging you off don’t know us and don’t know the situation we are in,” added Radice. “There were some pretty nasty things said on social media once people began to hear about the result.
“I take zero satisfaction out of the result but we knew we had to try and do something about the points difference and we had to go for it. The lads were very respectful, they went about it the right way. There was no mickey taking and we all had a drink in the bar afterwards.
“I played for Kendal so Kirkby Lonsdale is a club close to my heart, I have lot of happy memories about the club and I remember a few whippings over the years.”
And Radice says the result will count for nothing if they don’t back it up with a win at Stockport on Saturday - one of three games left to play this season.
“The margin of the win means the title is now back in our own hands,” he said. “But nothing changes, we still need to win all three games and pick up a bonus point. If we don’t, that game will count for nothing.”
