There was relief all round as Rovers claimed a point from a losing position for the first time in the Championship.

It also ended a 14-game wait for a goal for Ben Brereton as his 90th minute free kick earned Rovers a fourth consecutive draw in the Championship.

It was their first equalising goal of the Championship season and stopped West Brom making it seven successive home wins without conceding.

Rovers were spirited, but looked out of ideas and to be slipping to a familiar 1-0 defeat after Jayson Molumby put the hosts ahead 17 minutes from time.

While Rovers have now won only one of their last eight Championship matches, they claimed another valuable point on the road to take into a home double-header with Swansea City and Blackpool.

Rovers went with an unchanged team as Jon Dahl Tomasson kept faith with Hayden Carter alongside Scott Wharton, with Dom Hyam only returning on the bench.

West Brom had won seven in a row at home, without conceding, but required an early intervention for debutant goalkeeper Josh Griffiths to preserve his clean sheet.

Much had been made of Ben Brereton failing to find the net since the World Cup break, but Tomasson saw the number of chances he was getting as a positive.

He had to wait only three minutes for his first opportunity of the night, linking up with Harry Pickering to get into the box, and after the ball ran his way, he thumped a strike goalwards that the ‘keeper tipped over the bar.

West Brom made four alterations from their defeat to Birmingham City, which included the return of Brandon Thomas-Asante at the head of their attack.

The hosts were eager to use his physicality at every opportunity, and clocked up six corners inside the opening 20 minutes.

Rovers had stood up well to them, and a series of long throws, but should have fell behind in the 18th minute as they switched off from a John Swift delivery to allow Darnell Furlong a free header at goal. Fortunately it was straight at Aynsley Pears who palmed the ball to safety.

The hosts were starting the ramp up the pressure as a loose Bradley Dack pass allowed Thomas-Asante a shot at goal from distance, one which didn’t quite dip in time to trouble Pears.

He was locked in a good battle with Wharton, though the Rovers man misjudged the flight of the ball 10 minutes before the break as Thomas-Asante hooked it across goal for Swifth whose acrobatic effort was just over the top.

Rovers’ threat was minimal, their best opportunities coming when winning the ball high up the pitch.

Dack did force a save, albeit a comfortable one, out of Griffiths when meeting a Joe Rankin-Costello cross on the volley.

While West Brom had the better of the first half, Pears was well protected by those infront of him. There was a change in the backline at the break though, with Hyam on in place of Wharton.

The second half started like the first with Brereton first to try his luck, albeit from further out this time, and a more comfortable save from Griffiths who got right behind his long-ranger.

Unlike the first though, another was to follow soon after. He went alone when found by Tyrhys Dolan on the break, but this time couldn’t get his shot on target as it flew over the bar.

West Brom were soon back threatening, with the post denying Jayson Molumby who was fresh onto the pitch. A scramble in the box saw the ball drop for him 18 yards out, with his shot coming back off the post with Pears rooted to the spot.

Yet it was Rovers who were bossing things, finding a threat to go with their level of control.

Joe Rankin-Costello and Dolan had efforts blocked as the hosts failed to clear a set piece, before Tomasson turned to his bench again.

The withdrawal of Dack wasn’t the most popular of calls among the travelling supporters, while Sorba Thomas was also replaced. Sam Szmodics and Ryan Hedges were the two players to be brought on.

There was then disappointment for Rankin-Costello as injury forced him off, with Callum Brittain on in his place.

The game was in the balance therefore heading into the final quarter, before the hosts snatched the lead with 17 minutes to play, as Molumby nod home the loose ball.

It was all too preventable from a Rovers point of view, with Morton not clearing his lines which allowed Furlong to deliver a cross from which the goal would come.

A final Rovers change with nine minutes remaining saw Sam Gallagher replace Morton.

Though it was West Brom who went close to a second, Jed Wallace bending a free kick around the wall and narrowly wide of the target.

There was a nervy moment soon after for Pears, who let a Diangana cross slip through his fingers at the expense of a corner, with the ball at the wrong end of the pitch from a Rovers persuasion.

There chance to take something from the game looked to have gone until Brereton stood over a 90th minute free kick. His effort was well hit, beating Griffiths for power, despite the keeper getting a strong hand to it.

Both sides traded corners in the six added minutes, with Pears denying a Molumby header with an excellent fingertip stop, while Szmodics snatched at a shot wide of the target.
