Rovers are looking to secure a second loan for right back James Brown – but won’t be sanctioning any outgoing deals with the squad size as it is.

Brown returned to Rovers last week after his loan spell at League Two side Stockport County was cut short after 22 appearances.

The 24-year-old was due to spend the season at Edgeley Park, but has since returned and started Rovers Under-21s’ last two matches.

Rovers will look to get Brown another move to further his experience, but Jon Dahl Tomasson is keen to ensure he doesn’t leave himself short of numbers.

Tomasson had to call on all available options with six senior players unavailable for the game at Rotherham United.

The expectation is that Scott Wharton and Ben Brereton will return to the squad at Bristol City this weekend, while Sam Szmodics is due to train this week.

However, there is concern over Dom Hyam who came off in the defeat to Rotherham United with an ankle problem which will need to be assessed.

On the prospect of outgoings, Tomasson said: “At the moment no one goes out of the building. That’s very clear.

“Things can change quickly in football but at the moment we need everyone in the building.

“I can say no-one will be going out at the minute.”

Tomasson did however confirm that Rovers would look for a loan move for Brown.

After a positive time at Stockport, Under-21s boss Mike Sheron believes the Irishman is well-placed to get another move secured for the remainder of the season.

“He’s generally very pleased,” he said.

“He’s come back and looks very fit.

“It was evident.

“Sometimes you see lads playing lower than the Championship and their fitness levels aren’t as high, but credit to him he’s come back in and played two 90 minutes.

“He looks capable, he looks strong, and he’s benefited from going out on loan.

“He’s committed and reliable and they are traits that any manager would want.”

Charlton Athletic remain confident of securing the signing of Tayo Edun in this window.

However, they will be hoping there is no lasting damage after the left back pulled out of Rovers Under-21s’ game with Everton.

Edun was on the bench for Rovers’ defeat at Rotherham United having been brought on in the New Year’s Day win over Cardiff City.

He was set to be given a run-out in the Premier League 2 fixture with Everton on Sunday, but was pulled out of the starting line-up having not completed the warm-up.

Jalil Saadi took his place at left back, with Edun having felt soreness in his Achilles.

Sheron added: “Tayo had a bit of an injury before kick-off. He felt he had an Achilles strain so I think it was right not to risk him.

“I don’t think it’s overly serious because was involved in the warm-up initially but he probably had a bit of doubt in his mind so it’s the right thing to do.”

One player who has departed this month is Louie Annesley.

The Gibraltar international saw his four-year stay at Ewood come to an end as he joined Dundalk FC on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old was a regular for Sheron’s side during his time at the club, but made only one senior appearance in the Carabao Cup win at Bradford City in August.

“I think Louie has been disappointed that he didn’t get many opportunities,” Sheron said.

“He’s been great with us, very professional, he’s a great lad.

“He’s well-liked in the dressing room but I think it’s right for him, and the club, for him to go and develop a career and I wish him all the best.”
