Rovers were again linked with a move for Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell – with reports yesterday that the club had seen a £1.5m bid turned down for the midfielder.
However, the Lancashire Telegraph understands that to be wide of the mark.
Instead, the expectation is that Cantwell will join Glasgow Rangers this month.
Rovers’ links to Cantwell aren’t a surprise, with the club first credited with interest in the 24-year-old in the summer.
That came as the club appointed Gregg Broughton as director of football, who previously worked as Norwich’s Academy manager between 2014 and 2017 as Cantwell was progressing through the Carrow Road ranks.
While the links last summer were about Rovers taking Cantwell on loan, the latest reports stated the club had looked to secure a permanent move this month.
That comes as Cantwell goes into the final six months of his Norwich deal after the club exercised a one-year option in his contract last summer.
He has played 19 times in all competitions for Norwich this season, but wasn’t in the squad for the FA Cup tie with Rovers last weekend.
Clubs outside of England are free to speak with Cantwell about a pre-contract agreement that would take effect in the summer.
That avenue is open to Rangers, though a permanent move is thought to be the most likely.
While Gers boss Michael Beale didn’t confirm interest in Cantwell when pressed at the weekend, he refused to downplay the talk.
He said: “Todd was an excellent player when he was young and playing against my Liverpool Under-23s.
“I thought he would go on and have a fantastic career. He had that at the start and he is maybe just looking for a move to re-ignite it but I think he is a fantastic player at a good age.”
