Vincent Kompany felt there were positives to take from Burnley’s 2-0 defeat at Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.

Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford were on target either side of half time as the Clarets missed out on a quarter-final place.

Kompany’s men had their moments at the other end, with Darko Churlinov and Ashley Barnes both missing good opportunities.

The Burnley boss was pleased his side didn’t “roll over” against a side who are fifth in the Premier League.

He said: “It was a good, honest, brave performance filled with energy and you look back at the chances we’ve had, that makes you feel like just connecting with one of them could give you something maybe.

“I didn’t want us to roll over because we came to Old Trafford, and I don’t think we did at any point. There are definitely some positives for us to take from the performance.”

Rashford carried the ball from his own half to the Burnley penalty area before beating Bailey Peacock-Farrell with a clinical strike just before the hour mark.

Asked if his side could have done more to stop the goal, Kompany added: “We have a backline with early 20-year-olds in there. You handle it differently with time.

“I think the key thing for me is you have a player with quality there. I think there’s a positional mistake, whereby we’re allowing the space to drive at us, but then after that you’re in the hands of the quality of the player.”

The Clarets are back in Championship action on Tuesday, December 27 when they welcome Birmingham to Turf Moor (8pm).

Kompany’s men are currently three points clear at the top of the table, having lost just two league matches since the start of the campaign.
