Burnley winger Anass Zaroury says he is “honoured” after being called up as a late addition to the Morocco squad for the World Cup.

Zaroury has hit the ground running at Turf Moor since his move from Belgian club Charleroi over the summer.

The 22-year-has scored six goals for the Clarets, including a composed finish in the 3-0 win against fierce rivals Blackburn Rovers last weekend.

He also bagged a brace in the recent 3-1 win against Crawley Town in the Carabao Cup third round despite only playing the final half hour.

Zaroury has featured for the Belgian Under-21 side this season but is also eligible to represent Morocco.

The youngster was called up as a replacement for Amine Harit, who has been ruled out of the tournament after suffering a knee injury while playing for French outfit Marseille over the weekend.

He wrote on social media: "I am very happy and honoured to be able to defend the colours of Morocco in the world's best competition.

"I want to thank my relatives, my family and the Moroccan supporters for their immense support, not forgetting the coach for his confidence and giving me the opportunity to realise a child's dream!"

Zaroury could now come up against Belgium in the group stage, with Croatia and Canada also in Group F.

Walid Regragui’s side kick off the group stage against Croatia on Wednesday, November 23 (KO 10am).

They also have a warm-up game against Georgia this afternoon at the Sharjah Stadium in the United Arab Emirates (KO 4pm).
