Burnley’s busy Championship continues as they make the trip to the Stadium of Light to take on Sunderland.
Vincent Kompany’s men were held to a 1-1 draw at Birmingham City on Wednesday night despite Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s first goal in 18 months.
The Clarets are currently third in the table, having lost just one league game since the start of the campaign.
Team news
Defensive pair Ian Maatsen and Jordan Beyer will be assessed after missing the trip to Birmingham in midweek.
Darko Churlinov is making good progress but Burnley are still unsure if he will be back before the World Cup break.
Meanwhile, the hosts will be without Aji Alese after the defender limped off during the second half against Blackburn on Tuesday night.
Midfielder Lynden Gooch missed out in midweek but could be back in contention for Saturday’s match.
Opposition lowdown
Sunderland are currently 13th in the Championship table as they aim to build on last season’s promotion from League One.
The Black Cats suffered a 2-0 defeat against Blackburn in their last outing after goals from Ben Brereton and Scott Wharton.
Tony Mowbray took charge of the North East club earlier this season after Alex Neil left his position to join Stoke City.
Head-to-head
Burnley have faced Sunderland 117 times in their history, with a record of 38 wins, 32 draws and 47 defeats.
The points were shared when the sides last met in the league following a goalless draw at the Stadium of Light in March 2017.
However, the Black Cats ran out 3-1 winners in a Carabao Cup tie at Turf Moor in August 2019 despite Jay Rodriguez’s opener.
The Clarets’ last win against Sunderland came in an FA Cup tie in January 2017, with Sam Vokes and Andre Gray getting on the scoresheet in a 2-0 victory.
