Burnley boss Owen Coyle has decided to release Garreth O'Connor.
O'Connor's three-year-deal was due to expire in the summer, but the Clarets have opted to release the former Bournemouth midfielder now to give him the best possible chance of finding a new club.
Manager Coyle said: "It's unfortunate for Garreth that it's never worked out and we wish him well.
"He has worked hard during my time here and just never got a chance."
O'Connor joined Burnley in 2005 from AFC Bournemouth and the 29 year-old impressed in his first season at Turf Moor, netting six goals by mid-October - including 4 in as many games.
But despite that, he struggled during the 2006/07 campaign, limited to one start and nine appearances as a substitute.
The Dubliner was placed on the transfer list in May 2007 and began this season on loan at former club Bournemouth.
He returned to Burnley in October, but since then has failed to break into the first team.
