Away supporters at Ewood Park will now be situated in the lower tier of the Darwen End.

It follows a move by the club to reverse the previous decision of housing travelling fans in the upper tier.

It was first introduced by the club in 2018 and has largely been the case since for teams who have brought fewer than 2,000 fans.

It remained the case for the opening two home matches of this season against QPR and Hartlepool United.

It even prompted a tweet from the Pools’ official account which read: ‘Pools fans in good voice despite being placed so far up behind the goal they may as well be in Burnley.’

Former manager Tony Mowbray was a believer in not giving the away side an advantage when attacking the Darwen End and to have opposition supporters in the upper tier.

It was also commented on how Rovers fans have been placed in similar areas on their travels, such as Millwall, while Middlesbrough and Norwich City put away supporters in one corner.

Yet many Rovers fans have preferred to have the opposition fans in the lower tier, believing it creates a better atmosphere.

That appeared to be the case against West Bromwich Albion, as the home fans roared their side to victory, with the atmosphere helped by the near 2,000 strong Baggies following.

They were housed in the corner of the Darwen End closest to the Jack Walker Stand.

The club have confirmed the switch to the lower tier is a permanent one. The upper tier will be used as an overspill however for teams who sell in excess of 5,000 tickets.

Rovers had previously used a section of the Darwen End for home supporters, but tickets haven’t been regularly sold in that area of the ground for home fans since 2017.
