Rovers have made Barnsley full-back Callum Brittain their first signing of the summer.

The 24-year-old has put pen to paper over a four-year contract at Ewood Park and joins for a fee that could eventually rise to seven figures.

Rovers tried to move for Brittain during the January window, though their advances were knocked back.

Director of football Greg Broughton said: “We are delighted to welcome Callum to Blackburn Rovers.

“His profile fits exactly with the playing model we are building at the club – technically proficient, physically robust and the desire to become a better player every day.

“Callum has already played over 200 senior games, including reaching the Championship play-offs a year ago.

“I have had the opportunity to follow Callum’s career since watching him live on loan in Iceland in 2016 and again when he made his MK Dons debut against Norwich City in the Football League Trophy a few months later.

“He has sat at the top of Rovers’ transfer target list for right-sided players for the last 12 months and so as soon as we had Jon’s full backing, we had no hesitation in bringing Callum to the club.

“We would like to place on record our thanks to Barnsley for dealing with the transfer as professionally and efficiently as possible.”

Brittain joined the Yorkshire club from MK Dons back in October 2020 and has since racked up 76 appearances in the Championship.

He is able to play at right back, or wing-back, but also in midfield, and would give Jon Dahl Tomasson the flexibility of going with a back three, or back four.

The 24-year-old arrives at Ewood Park following Ryan Nyambe’s departure at the end of his contract. The defender has since completed a move to newly-promoted Wigan Athletic.
