Rovers have made their move for Barnsley wing-back Callum Brittain.
There is a growing expectation that a deal for the 24-year-old will be tied up, and Brittain will become Jon Dahl Tomasson’s first signing.
Rovers tried to move for Brittain in January, though their advances were knocked back, instead moving for Deyovaisio Zeefuik on loan with a view to permanent move.
That came as Rovers looked to secure a long-term replacement for Ryan Nyambe who left the club at the end of his contract and is thought to be close to a move to Wigan Athletic.
Zeefuik returned to Hertha Berlin after an injury-hit time at Ewood Park, leaving the club still searching for Nyambe’s replacement.
And the indications are that a move for Brittain, who was a key part of Barnsley’s side that reached the play-offs in 2020/21, will reach a positive conclusion.
The overall package is expected to be in excess of £1m, with a medical understood to have been scheduled.
Brittain’s availability has been helped by Barnsley’s relegation to League One after a dismal 2021/22 campaign. He has a year left to run on his contract, though the recently-relegated club do have a one-year option in their favour.
Barnsley have already sold strikers Cauley Woodrow and Carlton Morris to Luton Town, while Callum Styles has been linked with an move away from Oakwell.
Brittain is one of the club’s other main assets, and it is expected that the Reds will cash in on the player signed from MK Dons in October 2020.
Since then he has clocked up 76 appearances in the Championship for Barnsley, and impressed against Rovers in their 2-1 defeat at Ewood Park in December.
He is able to play at right back, or wing-back, but also in midfield, and would give Tomasson the flexibility of going with a back three, or back four.
