Ben Davies is set to secure a move to Rangers – following interest from Rovers.

The central defender is expected to secure a permanent move to the Ibrox club from Liverpool in a deal that could rise to £4m.

Jon Dahl Tomasson described Davies as ‘a good player’ and confirmed he was aware of the 26-year-old following last week’s friendly with Dundee.

That came after speculation linked Rovers with a loan move for the defender who spent last season with Sheffield United.

Any temporary move would likely have required a loan fee, which Rovers have opted against in recent seasons, with the Blades having paid £500,000 to secure him on a season-long deal in 2021/22.

However, Davies was always said to prefer a permanent move, and with Rangers set to lose left-sided defender Calvin Bassey to Ajax, they turned their attentions to the former Preston man.

North End will be due a cut of the fee following the deal which took him to Anfield in a surprise move in January 2021.

Davies leaves the Reds without playing a senior game however, and looking to get his career back on track. He played 23 times during an injury-hit season at Bramall Lane, his one goal coming against Rovers in March.

Rovers are in the market for at least one central defender after seeing captain Darragh Lenihan turn down the offer of a new contract to sign for Middlesbrough, while player of the year Jan Paul van Hecke returned to Brighton at the end of his successful loan spell.
