Jay Haddow has ended speculation over his future by signing a professional deal with Rovers.
It had looked as though Haddow was set for pastures new, with strong interest from Championship new boys Sunderland, but the right back has committed his future to Rovers.
He is the latest player from Rovers’ promising crop of Academy prospects to agree professional terms, with Haddow signing a deal through to June 2024, with a 12-month option.
It will see Haddow continue his journey at the club that he has been with since the age of 12.
The 18-year-old played nine times for Rovers Under-23s last season, having previously been a regular within the Under-18s set-up, playing all four of their FA Youth Cup matches in 2021/22 in their run to the last eight.
And after signing his deal, he said: “It’s a very proud moment because I’ve worked my whole life to become a professional footballer.
“This is just the first step, I’m well aware of that, and I know there’s a long road ahead.
“I’m proud to say I’m a professional footballer and I know I need to work even harder to get that next contract and to move up the ranks.”
An attacking right back, who has also played on the left, Haddow will be looking to cement his place in Mike Sheron’s side next term.
He has also made his international debut this summer, playing for Japan Under-19s at the Maurice Revello Tournament.
And Haddow credits the club for their role in his development which he will be aiming to continue following his contract agreement.
He added: “I’ve been here for five or six years now and it’s been great. I’ve had a good scholarship here, I’ve been in good teams and I’ve learned a lot, especially in the first year when we weren’t winning too many games, which was a big learning curve for us all.
“I know I need to learn a lot more to continue progressing here. My coaches have helped me tremendously and I’ve developed so much from the Under-12s through to the Under-18s.
“They’ve been nothing but helpful and I can’t thank them enough for that.”
