Darragh Lenihan has been forced to withdraw from the Republic of Ireland squad through injury.
National team boss Stephen Kenny told reporters that the Rovers captain has undergone a scan which has revealed a ‘torn groin’.
However, it is understood any tear is only a minor one, with the injury only set to sideline him for a couple of weeks having sustained it in the closing stages of the weekend defeat at Reading.
The 28-year-old had been rewarded for his excellent form this season with a first call-up to the national team squad in 12 months.
He had been eyeing a first cap for his country since 2018 ahead of friendlies with Belgium and Lithuania
However, Kenny revealed the news at his press conference this afternoon which comes as a bitter disappointment to the central defender.
Lenihan has been instrumental for the club this season, playing 36 of their 39 Championship matches this season, and winning praise for his displays from manager Mowbray, particularly given the uncertainty over his contract, with his deal at Ewood Park expiring in the summer.
Speaking last week, Mowbray told the Lancashire Telegraph: “Lenihan, no-one deserves it more than Lenihan. He’s been amazing for us.
“With his contractual situation I’ve not had to question his mindset but the professionalism he’s shown when he’s running out of contract has been amazing.
“Great credit to them, it’s an honour to play for your country, hopefully they all get some game-time and then we’ll come back and assess them for the game against Coventry of who we feel is ready and available to play.
“That’s why you need options and we’ll address it as we get to that moment.”
