Hayden Carter has made an impressive start to life at Portsmouth who are keen to keep the Rovers youngster beyond the end of the season.
Pompey boss Danny Cowley has made clear his intention to try and sign Carter on loan for next season having become a fixture in his side since joining on loan last month.
Rovers allowed the 22-year-old to leave on loan in January, despite featuring nine times in the Championship, with Tony Mowbray keen for him to gain some additional experience.
He thrived during a loan spell with Burton Albion in the second half of last season, finishing second in their player of the year vote, and has already become a hit with his latest loan club.
Carter signed an extended deal with Rovers in the summer and is highly regarded at the club, though Mowbray has always made clear his preference for the club’s young defenders to gain experience out on loan.
It worked well with Scott Wharton who is thriving on the first-team scene after a series of spells away from Ewood Park, with Cowley hoping Rovers will agree to similar with Carter.
He said: “I like Hayden, I think he’s a really good player.
“I don’t want to shout it too much because I would like to keep him. He’s a good player, there is no doubt. He is going to have a great career, he’s a great kid, very level-headed. We’re adding to his game, he’s humble.
“He wants to work, he wants to improve and he’s been a pleasure.”
Carter has started six successive League One games for Pompey, who have won back-to-back games heading into Saturday’s trip to Crewe Alexandra.
Another Rovers young defender Rovers allowed to leave on loan in January was Tyler Magloire.
He joined Northampton Town in League Two where he has made three successive starts, helping them to three clean sheets.
His performances were enough for him to be named in the League Two team of the week, with Magloire no stranger to a loan spell having previously turned out for Rochdale, Motherwell and Hartlepool United.
The 23-year-old sees his Rovers contract expire in the summer.
