Tony Mowbray says he will be content if Rovers can get prospective deals over the line before Monday’s transfer deadline.

Mowbray was in bullish mood as he declared midfielder Joe Rothwell wouldn’t be leaving the club before the January 31 deadline – and stated the club are in the market for new players.

The manager says permanent and loan deals are being looked at and should Rovers get deals over the line following positive talks this week, the squad would be looking strong for the final 18 games.

Mowbray ruled out a move for Bordeaux striker Josh Maja, and also outlined that a move for Aberdeen winger Ryan Hedges wouldn’t be happening in this window.

And while the manager wouldn’t be drawn into talk of other targets, he said: “I think if we do the business we’re trying to do then the squad will look pretty strong.

“We’re trying to sign some players with adaptability and flexibility in their positions who can play in more than one position.

“If the signings happen I’ll be pretty comfortable.”

Rovers have looked to the European market in a bid to look for more permanent deals.

Deyovaisio Zeefuik has signed on an initial loan deal with a view to a permanent switch in the summer, with a deal for a forward also being discussed.

Domestic loan signings is the other market that Rovers are looking at, and after declaring both short and long-term deals were being progressed, Mowbray added: “It’s important in certain areas not to clog it up too much.

“I talk about having your own players in the club so you can develop and polish them up.

“It can work against you if you have too many in certain positions and you end up with one or two of those new signings not even making the bench.

“The loan market is something that we’ll try and utilise and as I’ve said if it’s the right player we’ll try and sign them.”

Striker Maja failed a medical on deadline day in the summer which saw an agreed season-long loan deal fall through.

Reports in France this week said Bordeaux were in talks with an unnamed Championship club over a move, but Mowbray confirmed the 23-year-old wasn’t a player that had been discussed in this window.

He added: “It was common knowledge that he came and had a medical which he didn’t pass and hasn’t played much since then.

“It makes sense that the name was thrown back in but not for us in this transfer window.”

The Lancashire Telegraph understands that a deal has been agreed with Aberdeen forward Hedges that will see him move to Ewood Park in the summer once his deal with the Dons expires.

Mowbray wouldn’t confirm that with the 26-year-old still under contract at his current club, but said the prospect of a permanent January move was unlikely.

“Ryan Hedges isn’t our player, he’s contracted to Aberdeen, I would suggest that’s not going to happen in this window,” he explained.

“I have spoken to Stephen Glass, he was one of my players in the past so I do keep in touch, and talk to them quite frequently.

“I’m not sure I see Ryan Hedges leaving Aberdeen in this window.”
