Burnley's operational director Brendan Flood says he was hopeful to have midfielder Besart Berisha fit and available again before the end of the season.
The Albanian international, who signed from SV Hamburg for £340,000 in the summer, tore his cruciate ligament while on international duty in Malta and was expected to be ruled out for the season.
But the Kosovan-born winger has shown remarkable powers of recovery and could make his return in April.
