ROSSENDALE tasted defeat for the first time in 11 matches as they crashed out of the EDF Senior Vase National Cup.
Dale travelled to the North East full of confidence on the back of their recent run of form.
The fifth round match was the best performance the club has made and expectations were high.
Shaun Stirrup slotted over an early penalty but Dale could not make their pressure count and trailed 5-3 at the break.
After the break Dale were reduced to 14 men on three occasion and a number of injuries saw Billingham take advantage and open up a 24-6 lead.
Dale launched a comeback with tries from Stirrup and Danny Collins but it proved to be too late.
Coach David Wood said: "All in all it was a disappointing day for the team.
"We lacked the confidence I thought was needed to get out in front early on. And, ultimately, we paid for our cautious approach."
