Ben Brereton has been named in the Chile squad and will meet up with his national team-mates for the first time this summer on Monday.

Chile’s 27-man squad includes Brereton for their three upcoming World Cup qualifiers with Peru (October 8), Paraguay (October 11) and Venezuela (October 15).

Brereton was named in the squad for the September matches, but didn’t travel to meet up with the national team owing to the 10-day quarantine requirement upon his return that would have ruled him out of Rovers’ three games after the international break.

Chile then filed a complaint with FIFA which would have landed Brereton with a five-day suspension, ruling him out of games with Luton Town and Hull City, only for a resolution to be reached on the eve of Rovers’ return to action.

That will see Brereton feature in the games against Peru and Paraguay before returning to the UK to begin what is hoped to be a five-day quarantine period, with the Government set to reduce the figure in half for footballers.

That exemption, if confirmed, would see Brereton miss the game with Coventry City on October 16, but be back in contention for the trip to QPR three days later.

Without Brereton, Chile had a tough international break, picking up just one point from their three matches, with defeats to Brazil and Colombia and a 0-0 draw with Ecuador.

That leaves Chile eighth in the 10-man table at the halfway stage of the qualifiers having only picked up seven points from their nine fixtures.

Brereton will travel to Chile on Sunday after Rovers’ game at Blackpool, with the squad planning to meet up on Monday, his first involvement in the national team since his five appearances in the Copa America after pledging his allegiance to La Roja.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a fine start to the season, his hat-trick in the win over Cardiff City taking him to seven goals this season, matching the tally he managed in the whole of the 2021/22 campaign.

As well as Brereton, there is also the return of Alexis Sanchez to the Chile squad, the Inter Milan attacker having missed out on the September matches because of injury.
